DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO GET MARRIED IN A CATHOLIC CHURCH
BETWEEN TWO CATHOLICS:
1. Baptism Certificate (An original complete with church seal from your baptismal church that has been issued
within 6 months of the date of the wedding; copies are not accepted.)
2. Confirmation and First Communion Certificate(s)/Notations
3. Affidavits (Freedom to Marry) for the bride and for the groom
4. Information for Marriage: Form to be completed.
5. Civil Marriage License: Marriage licenses are issued by the City of Charlottesville Circuit Court Clerk's Office. The
clerk's office is located in the Charlottesville Circuit Courthouse, 315-C E. High St. on the lower level. The cost for
a license is $30 and they are valid for a period of 60 days. For more info, call 434-970-3766.
6. Marriage preparation Course Completion Certificate.
7. There must be no impediment to the marriage: an existing marriage bond or close family or blood relationship
BETWEEN A CATHOLIC AND A CHRISTIAN
A. FOR THE CATHOLIC
1. Baptism Certificate (Issued within 6 months of the date of the wedding)
2. Confirmation and First Communion Certificate
3. Letter of Freedom to get married (Affidavit)
4. Mixed Religion - Form to be completed (This is done by the priest and Permission being obtained from
Diocesan Chancery Office. The Catholic will be required to sign an undertaking to continue living their own faith and
to do all in their power to have children(s) from the marriage baptized and brought up in the Church)
5. Information for Marriage - Form to be completed
6. Certificate from local Town Hall (Civil Marriage License).
7. There must be no impediment to the marriage: an existing marriage bond or close family or blood relationship.
B. FOR NON CATHOLIC
1. Baptism Certificate (Issued within 6 months of the date of the wedding).
2. Letter of Freedom to get married (Affidavit).
3. Mixed Religion - Form to be completed (This is done by the priest and Permission being obtained from Diocesan

A. FOR THE CATHOLIC

4. Dispensation - Form to be completed (This is done by the priest and Dispensation being obtained from Diocesan
Chancery Office. The Catholic will be required to sign an undertaking to Continue living their own faith and to do all in
their power to have children from the marriage baptized and brought up in the Church)

6. Certificate from local Town Hall (Civil Marriage License)

B. FOR THE NON BAPTIZED PARTY
1. Letter of Freedom to marry (Witnessed by a Commissioner for Oaths)
2. Dispensation - Form to be completed (This is done by the priest w/Dispensation being obtained from Diocesan
Chancery Office. The Catholic is required to sign an undertaking to continue living their own faith and to do all in their
power to have children from the marriage baptized and brought up in the church
3. Information for Marriage - Form to be complete
4. Certificate from local Town Hall (Civil Marriage License)
5. There must be no impediment to the marriage: an existing marriage bond or close family or blood relationship
