AVAILABLE FOR 2023 - ZIMBABWE TRAVELING QUILT
This year’s traveling quilt is a colorful comforter made by Addlight Mudombo in Zimbabwe. It will
raise funds to help MCC partners in Zimbabwe who support people in rural areas by assisting them
to feed their families as they adapt to climate change and develop new earning opportunities. One
partner is Score Against Poverty
(SCORE), a locally run organization
that empowers women, the primary
support of their families, through
clean energy technology.
Addlight was a recipient of SCORE's
biodigester, which turns cow manure
into gas energy. Now she can cook
quickly and efficiently on her gas
stove instead of spending hours
searching for firewood in remote and
sometimes dangerous areas.
Addlight uses her extra time to co-
manage her brother-in-law’s farm
with her husband, Elnathan
Mboweni. The biodigester also
creates a manure biproduct that is a
potent fertilizer for their crops. This
eliminates the cost of chemical
fertilizer.
Together, they also have time to create
handsewn pieced comforters to sell for
extra income. Elnathan makes the
designs and templates. They cut the
blocks from used clothing, and
Addlight pieces and sews the
comforters by hand. She will sell them
for extra income. She also teaches
other women how to make the
comforters.
This comforter was purchased by MCC News Coordinator Linda Espenshade after visiting the family
and recognizing the connection between quilts and relief sales and the commonality of lives being
positively impacted through a beautiful craft.
As a member of SCORE’s Women Coalition for Climate Change, Addlight also encourages her
neighbors to help protect the environment by planting trees and using their community savings and
loan groups to buy biodigesters, energy-efficient stoves and solar power.
Funds raised through this traveling quilt will support partners in Zimbabwe and should be designated
to “Zimbabwe Food and Livelihoods.
Traveling quilts are for display only, giving a visual image for the donation of Blessing Bids toward
the Zimbabwe theme. Blessing Bids are reported by the sale treasurer as designated gifts, allowing
MCC to direct the funds toward the designated programs. After the sale, the traveling quilt should be
promptly returned to Les Gustafson-Zook or forwarded to the next sale using the quilt as directed.
To reserve this traveling quilt for your relief sale, please contact Les Gustafson-Zook at [email protected]
or call 574-238-3579.
Sharing Our Surplus (SOS) Campaign
A sixth-year initiative to raise money for refugees around the world
Each year the Virginia Mennonite Relief Sale raises hundreds of thousands
of dollars for Mennonite Central Committee for relief, development, and
peace in the name of Christ. This year we’re again offering an additional
opportunity to add to the total giving through a “Sharing Our Surplus" (SOS)
campaign that solicits cash, check and credit card gifts for MCC’s work with
refugees around the world.
In its first five years, this initiative has raised over $235,000. A donation
table in the Everence table and tent near the main entrance will be staffed
by volunteers who will receive donations Friday evening and all-day
Saturday.
Those unable to attend the Relief Sale in person can make a
generous contribution online at https://vareliefsale.com/donate/ or write a
check to Virginia Mennonite Relief Sale (with SOS on the memo line) and
mail it to Relief Sale, 601 Parkwood Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22802.
Harvey Yoder, chair of the SOS committee, encourages relief sale
supporters to give in the spirit of Jubilee justice—over and above our regular
tithes and offerings, and over and above what is normally raised through
auction and food sales.

not prewashed. To dry, drape over several
clotheslines to distribute the weight more
evenly or lay the quilt on a at surface over
absorbent towels. A quilt should never be
stored in plastic. Rather, it should be wrapped in
a sheet or pillowcase which allows it to breathe.
