The San Francisco 49ers used their rst round draft pick in 1985 on wide receiver
Jerry Rice from little known Mississippi Valley State. It did not take long for that
decision to pay huge dividends.
Rice gave a glimpse of what was to come when he averaged 18.9 yards per catch
on 49 receptions for 927 yards and 3 TDs as a rookie. He also rushed six times and
scored one touchdown on the ground.
In 1986, Rice recorded a season that began perhaps the nest stretch by any receiver in NFL history. That
year, he caught 86 passes for a league-leading 1,570 yards. He also led the NFL in touchdown catches with
15. It marked the rst of 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons for Rice who also recorded double-digit receiving
touchdown totals in nine of the next 10 seasons.
The following year, Rice set the NFL record for touchdown receptions in a season with 22. His rst of
four seasons with 100 catches came in 1990 when he had an even 100 receptions to lead the NFL in that
category. It marked the rst of two receiving titles for Rice.
He led the NFL in receiving yards six times including a NFL record 1,848 yards in 1995. Rice also led the NFL
in touchdown receptions six times.
No wide receiver in NFL history played more than Rices 20 seasons. By the time he retired after nishing
his career with Oakland and Seattle, he was the most prolic wide receiver in NFL history with staggering
career totals.
He owns virtually every signicant receiving mark. Some of the more notable career records include
receptions (1,549); receiving yards (22,895 yards); most 1,000-yard receiving seasons (14); total touchdowns
(208); and combined net yards (23,546).
Rice has a hold on multiple NFL playo and Super Bowl records. He played in eight conference
championships and four Super Bowls. He earned three Super Bowl rings with the 49ers and was named the
Most Valuable Player of San Franciscos Super Bowl XXIII win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Rice, who was named rst-team All-Pro 11 consecutive seasons and voted to 13 Pro Bowls, is also a member
of the NFLs All-Decade Teams of the 1980s and 1990s and NFLs 75th Anniversary Team.

David “Deacon Jones played defensive end for South Carolina State University
and Mississippi Valley State University from 1958 to 1960. Blessed with speed,
agility, and quickness, the “Deacon became one of the nest pass rushers in the
business. Yet had it not been for the chance observation of two Rams scouts viewing lms of an opponent,
he might never have had a chance to play pro football. When the scouts noted that the 6-4, 272-pound
tackle was outrunning the backs they were scouting, they recommended Jones as a sleeper pick. He went
on to unanimous all-league honors six straight years from 1965 through 1970 and was selected to eight Pro
Bowls. Jones was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980.

In the late summer of 1984, under the sweltering summer sun, Mississippi Valley
State head coach Archie Cooley made a suggestion to his young quarterback,
Willie Totten that he start calling plays at the line. At the time he thought his
coachs no huddle oense was crazy, but the only thing that would turn out to be crazy would be MVSU’s
passing oense led by Totten and his favorite target, Jerry Rice. With 139 career touchdown passes, The
Satellite became Division I-AAs (FCS) all-time leader and ranked second in career passing yards (13,240)
and single-season passing yards (5,093 in 1984). He twice led the nation in passing eciency. Five times
in Totten’s career he passed for more than 530 yards in a single game, including a 599-yard performance
in 1984 against Prairie View. Totten earned rst-team All-America status in 1984 after leading the nation
and setting the all-time single-season touchdown passes mark (56) for all divisions. Following a brief
professional career in the Canadian and Arena Football Leagues, Totten earned his masters degree from
Grambling before becoming the head football coach at his alma mater in 2001.

Hakim mcclellan
Director of Athletics
Mississippi Valley State University has turned to a familiar face to take the helm of
the Delta Devils athletic program.
Dr. Jerryl Briggs, Sr., announced on June 6, 2022 that Hakim McClellan, a valley
alum, is the school’s new athletic director. Briggs expressed his excitement to
welcome McClellan and his family back to MVSU. McClellan is expected to start his
new role on June 15th.
Today is a great day for Mississippi Valley State University, with the appointment
of Hakim McClellan as the athletic director, said MVSU President Jerry Briggs, Sr. Hakim has proven to be
a strong leader who will champion the school, but also the student-athletes. I believe there are very bright
days ahead for MVSU athletics, and Hakim will be a stable, guiding force through this exciting time, Dr.
Briggs added.
McClellan has an extensive background in collegiate athletic administration. His new position at MVSU is a
return home for the former MVSU student-athlete who also earned his bachelor’s in business administration
from MVSU in 2010 and his master’s in business administration, also from MVSU.
In addition, McClellan also worked on the compliance sta at MVSU. He was responsible for various
duties, including coordinating with the coaching sta to verify compliance with student athletic eligibility
standards.
McClellan shared how, during his time as a student at MVSU how friends called him “Hakim the dream in
reference to the former NBA player Hakeem Olajuwon, who went by the same nickname, and how that
name sums up his feeling about being chosen as the new AD.
This is a dream job for me, said McClellan. To have the opportunity to come home and work and help
elevate V-State is what I have always wanted to do. This a place that is built on the concept of family, and I
believe we can create the culture that helps our student-athletes become professionals on and o the eld,
said McClellan.
McClellan, 35, was selected following a national search that drew a strong pool of candidates. The Gulfport,
Mississippi, native said he is thankful for the opportunity.
“I thank Dr. Briggs for giving me the chance to come home and serve. “MVSU is a school that connects this
entire community - it has been and will continue to be my goal to make this university the school of the
Delta, he added. “I am grateful to the committee and others who provided input in this important decision.
Lastly, from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank my family, friends, and especially my wife Eleanor for
their support through my entire career.
McClellan recently worked at Jackson State University, where he served as the Associate Athletic Director for
Compliance. McClellan has also worked at Prairie View A&M and worked as the Athletic Academic Advisor
for the mens baseball, womens basketball, soccer, and track & eld teams. In July of 2016, he was named as
PVAMU’s rst Certication Ocer in the Oce of the Registrar.

About Mississippi Valley State University
The institution, which opened in 1950, was created by the Mississippi Legislature as Mississippi Vo-
cational College. The legislation to form the institution was signed into law by Governor Thomas L.
Bailey on April 5, 1946. On February 10, 1950, Governor Fielding L. Wright served as the main speak-
er at the opening ceremony.[5]
The legislature anticipated that legal segregation of public education was in danger because there
were increasing challenges to it through legal suits (in 1954 it was declared unconstitutional in the
United States Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education). It created this institution
in the hopes that it would attract African-American applicants who might otherwise apply to Mis-
sissippi's premier whites-only institutions: the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University,
and the University of Southern Mississippi.
State leaders hoped that founding separate institutions of higher learning for Mississippi's black
population would reduce the pressure to integrate the state's premier universities. To attract the
support of those who opposed any government action to provide higher education to blacks, those
proposing creation of M.V.C. used the term "vocational" to imply that the institution's main purpose
would be to train blacks to take on blue-collar jobs.
The site selection committee appointed by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher
Learning had originally selected as a site the former Greenwood Army Air Base, which had many
facilities ready for use and thus would have been a very cost-eective choice. The Greenwood
Commonwealth celebrated the choice. However, residents of Carroll County, Mississippi objected to
having the institution located near their properties.
After further study, the committee selected a site in Itta Bena. Whites of that town also objected to
having a black institution nearby, so the nal site chosen was away from the downtown area, and
on land that was not good for cultivation.
In 1964, Mississippi Vocational College was renamed Mississippi Valley State College. In February
1969, a nonviolent student boycott, which included eight hundred students, male and female, was
organized to protest President James Herbert White's administration. The students demanded re-

quired courses in black history, more library purchases of works by black writers, remedial courses in
English and Math, scheduling of prominent black speakers, and fewer curfew restrictions.
In the early 1970s, civil rights leaders continued to protest the inequalities in higher education op-
portunities oered to whites and blacks in Mississippi. In an eort to defuse some of the criticism,
Gov. Bill Waller proposed changing the names of three black institutions from "colleges" to "univer-
sities". Thus, in 1974, the institution was renamed again, as Mississippi Valley State University.
Following President White, Dr. Ernest A. Boykins, Jr. took oce in July 1971. Dr. Joe L. Boyer became
MVSU's third president in January 1982 and was followed by Dr. William W. Sutton in July 1988. Dr.
Lester C. Newman became the fth president of MVSU on July 1, 1998. Dr. Donna H. Oliver became
MVSU's sixth president and rst female president on January 1, 2009. On November 6, 2013, Dr. Wil-
liam Bynum took oce as MVSU's seventh president.
In May 2017, Bynum departed MVSU to become president of Jackson State University. Dr. Jerryl
Briggs, who served as executive vice president and chief operating ocer in Bynum's administra-
tion, was named interim president of the university shortly afterwards. On October 19, 2017, Briggs
was ocially named as the university's eighth president.
In a 1997 article in Innovative Higher Education, the journalist Dale Thorn describes MVSU's success-
ful attempt to avoid a merger with another institution and to remain a separate entity.
In 1998, the university renamed many of the buildings on campus, except for those named for white
supremacist politicians Walter Sillers, Jr., Fielding Wright, and J. H. White
