October 30: Rosedale Cemetery
Tour. Let’s get outside and go for a walk
through peaceful Rosedale Cemetery,
founded over 175 years ago. On this tour,
we’ll venture into the old section for this
guided tour, discussing grave imagery as
well as the people who are buried there.
Led by Collections Manager Erin Benz.
After a brief introduction at Rosedale
Chapel, we’ll head in cars to the old
section of the cemetery. There is about 2
miles of walking during the tour. Rosedale
Cemetery, 408 Orange Road, Montclair.

November 10: History at Home - Yogi
Berra: A Legend’s Lasting Values.
While Yogi’s accomplishments in baseball
are the striking centerpiece of his legacy,
his integrity and long-held principles are
just as crucial. This presentation by Eve
Schaenen, Executive Director of the Yogi
Berra Museum & Learning Center, will
touch on Yogi as athlete and statesman,
noting his impact on and off the field.

Many Voices. Stop by and receive a
guided tour of the Crane House & Historic
YWCA. Hear the many voices of the
men and women who lived, worked,
and played in the house throughout its
226-year history. While you’re here, see
what’s cooking on the hearth and explore
the herbs in the Landsberger Learning

This workshop in modern pointed-pen

of major transition—symbolized

especially as our midterm elections take

of the house, to the women and girls of
the African American YWCA, the Crane
House & Historic YWCA has seen how a
woman’s role in the house and in society

Frederick Law Olmsted, the master
designer of public parks and a founder
of the field landscape architecture. Join
historian and filmmaker Laurence Cotton
(originator of and consulting producer to
the PBS special “Frederick Law Olmsted:
Designing America”) as he does a deep
dive into the remarkable life and career
of the Renaissance-man Olmsted-writer,
philosopher, social reformer, advocate
for the preservation of natural scenery,
and creator of some of the most beautiful
public and private parks and gardens in

Struggle for Heritage. Dr. Christopher
Matthews of Montclair State University
discusses his new book, A Struggle for
Heritage, and shares its relevance for
inclusive history in communities like
Montclair. Christopher N. Matthews, Ph.D,
is the Chairperson of the Anthropology
Department at Montclair State University
and has written several other books. He
and his students have also conducted
archeological digs in Montclair, including
on the MHC campus focused on the
historic Crane and Clark houses. Virtual,

Eyewitness to Black History. Explore
200 years of Black history in Montclair
and New Jersey through rare first-hand
accounts, primary and secondary source
documents at the Crane House & Historic
YWCA. Artifacts include a bill of sale for
an enslaved person in the household,
an 1800s newspaper, an 1840s New
York Knickerbocker magazine, census
data, personal letters, oral histories, and
mid-century Jet and Ebony magazines.
These artifacts provide a springboard for
discussion about race both in the past and
in the present-day. 12 to 1pm, 1 to 2pm,
