HSGC to Partner with AIW / YWCA To Address DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Immigrant Women against Domestic Violence
HSGC will be arranging a presentation on this topic . Time and venue will be announced soon
Despite the promise of America many immigrants have found it difficult to achieve the “American Dream”. Little attention
has been paid to immigrant women who are battered. Violence against women is universal and strikes in all cultures, race,
ethnic, religious, age, and socio economic classes. However, battered immigrant women face even greater obstacles in
their efforts to escape violent relationships with issues often compounded by problems associated with immigration, cul-
tural, legal and language barriers. The Alliance for Immigrant Women (AIW) aims to raise awareness and address all these
issues.
Battered immigrant women face many cultural, economic & legal barriers to seeking and receiving assistance. Abusers
often use immigration related threats to assert control over their spouse’s movements, emotions, relationship with the out-
side world, and potentially every aspect of their life. Due to language barriers, inexperience with U.S. law, and fear of de-
portation, immigrant women are underserved by the U.S. government, underrepresented in policy making, and vulnerable
to basic human rights violations, especially domestic violence.
Alliance for Immigrant Women are making sure that addressing the needs of battered immigrants is an important part of
their agenda. A great deal of education is required within both immigrant communities about the problem and potential so-
lutions about the needs of immigrant women and their families and the barriers that keep them from seeking or receiving
help.
The silence surrounding domestic violence in South Asian American communities affects the well being of children and
families within these communities. South Asian community can take a unique leadership role in confronting this challenge.
You can volunteer to help victims of domestic violence and support the organizations in need. Most importantly, raising
awareness about domestic violence in our community. By discussing the issue with our families, friends, and religious
leaders, we can make it clear that domestic violence is never acceptable. We encourage the Hindu community to join us in
confronting this issue and break the silence about this disturbing problem. Victims, regardless of their immigrant status,
religious preference, or socio-economic class have the right to live free of domestic violence and be treated with respect.
In 2001 ,the Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati formed the Alliance of Battered and Abused International Women, now
called the Alliance for Immigrant Women for women facing domestic violence issues. YWCA provides safe protective shel-
ter and necessary supportive services for battered women and their children to move them toward self-sufficiency, inde-
pendence and freedom from abuse. It offers short and long-term support for women and their children .
The Alliance provides outreach to immigrant communities to increase awareness about domestic violence and community
resources. It provides training to service providers, law enforcement , immigrant communities to serve victims of domestic
violence. It plays a pivotal leadership role in raising public awareness of domestic violence issues and available re-
sources. It provides a strong ,completely confidential support of culturally appropriate referrals .
Participating organizations include Jewish, Hispanic, Catholic, Islamic communities, Police Departments, Hospitals, UC,
Hamilton County Job Placement, YWCA,Shelters, Legal Departments and a lot more. Over twenty agencies have joined
to develop prevention and interventional programs to ensure full access to all available help and resources.
The Alliance has emerged as a leader in Ohio in producing culturally and linguistically appropriate resource materials on
domestic violence and developed a Cultural Resource Guidebook to aid service providers in assisting international victims
of domestic violence. The Alliance provides training to a wide range of audiences, including service providers, law en-
forcement, immigrant community-based organizations, medical personnel, and many other groups that serve immigrant
victims of domestic violence. It is an important issue and needs our attention. We need to reach out to community mem-
bers who need our help. Volunteers will also be needed. If you would like to be notified of the upcoming presentation,
please email me at mehangeeta@gmail.com .

APPEAL REGARDING ROAD REPAIR
Dear Devotees,
As you are already aware, due to the severe weather we had this past
winter, both sides of the Temple road conditions have deteriorated & need
immediate repair and attention. This project requires patching up the holes
and thick blacktop from the main gate all the way to the back of the Temple where the
dumpster is on both sides of the road. We want to start this repair project as soon as
possible. As you know it will require around $50,000. We want all members and devo-
tees to share the cost. Please donate generously for this project as it is for the safety of
all of us. The sooner we start the process, the cheaper the overall repair cost will be. Any
checks from $100.00 to $500.00 for this project will be greatly appreciated. Please be
sure to mention on the check that it is for the road project. Also, we welcome any help or
advice on this issue. For any further details or questions, please contact the under-
signed.

Rattling the Mind – Krishna’s style!
Koti Sreekrishna
Like the “Baby and Pampers” paradigm, it is commonsense to change the diaper as needed. However, when in the
religious truth versus tradition context, often common sense takes back seat and people more often than not choose
tradition over truth! That is as funny as tail wagging the dog. No wonder, outmoded traditions look funny and people
who insist on that look crazy. Shock Treatment is often needed to wipe out the pitfalls of age old tradition! That is
what Krishna did to Arjuna in Bhagavad-Gita. These are some of the “Shock Treatment Shlokas” in the Bhagavad-
Gita, I am citing from The New Bhagavad-Gita: Timeless wisdom in the language of our times by Koti
Sreekrishna and Hari Ravikumar - coming soon!
2:11
You grieve for that which you should not, yet you speak words of wisdom. The wise do not grieve for the dead or
for the living.
Contrast this to Arjuna’s worry that the ancestors deprived of the funeral and post-death rites would land up in hell.
Krishna directly attacks the orthodox with his genial approach to handling life – focus on action rather than mere
words.
2:42
Those who lack proper insight take delight in the letter (and not spirit) of the Vedas and proclaim in flowery
words: ‘there is nothing else other than this’. The Vedas are the foremost revealed scriptures in Hinduism.
2:43
They are filled with desires, and reaching heaven is their supreme goal. Caught in the vicious cycle of karma, they
perform many elaborate rituals to attain pleasure and power.
2:44
Those attached to pleasure and power are led astray by that flowery language of the Vedas; they never attain the
firm intellect of a contemplative mind.
2:45
The Vedas deal with the three gunas; free yourself from the influence of the gunas. Go beyond the dualities and
give up the desire to acquire or accumulate. Be a master of yourself and be established in the eternal truth.
2:46
What is the use for a well when there is a flood and water is flowing freely everywhere?
What is the use of all the Vedas when one has realized the ultimate truth?
4:1
I taught this eternal yoga to Vivasvat; Vivasvat taught Manu and Manu taught Ikshvaku.
Vivasvat refers to the sun; Manu and Ikshvaku are his descendents, and patriarchs of the famous solar dynasty.
Krishna does not hesitate to remind Arjuna that the message of the age-less Sanatan Dharma was corrupted by age-old
traditions!
4:2
Thus handed down in regular succession, the rajarshis knew this. But over the long lapse of time
the yoga seems to be lost in this world.
Over time, the eternal yoga gets cluttered by tradition and complicated by excessive scholarship; thus, it is practically lost.
5:18
A wise person treats everyone equally – a scholar endowed with modesty, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and one who
eats a dog
A scholar is generally held in high esteem in society while a person who eats a dog is considered to be at the lowest level. The wise
notice the same inner spirit in all these beings irrespective of their external characteristics (See 4:35 and 6:30).
(Advaita SHikhAmaNi Adi Shankaracharya was quizzed by Shiva appearing as a chanDAla- shows how pervasive
traditional mind-set can be)
5:14
God does not command people to act. God does not create activities or its associated rewards. All these arise from
nature.
5:15
God is not responsible for goodness or evil. People are deluded because their knowledge is clouded by ignorance.
Goodness and evil are merely results of actions that people perform. God is not responsible for this.
9:20
Those versed in the 3 Vedas who relish soma & are cleansed of sin, honor me through yagñas with desire to go to
heaven.
By the merit gained they reach the heaven―the domain of Indra―and enjoy celestial pleasures.
9:21
Having enjoyed the wide world of heaven, they return to the earth once their merit is exhausted. Again impelled by
desire for heavenly pleasures, they resort to meritorious rites enjoined in the Vedas and are thus caught in the cycle of
birth and death. Contd on pg 11
Aradhana August 2010, Page 11
Contd from page 11
9:25
Those who worship other divinities, go to the divinities they seek; those who worship their ancestors go to ancestors
(they are united with them after death); those who worship elemental spirits, attain those spirits;
those who worship the supreme, attain the supreme! Those who worship elemental spirits, attain those spirits;
9:30
Even if a man steeped in evil takes on to my worship with undivided devotion, he must be considered as noble because he has taken
the right decision.
9:31
Readily, he becomes righteous and attains everlasting peace. Arjuna, know this: no devotee of mine is ever lost.
9:32
Whoever takes refuge in me – even men of sinful birth, women, traders, or laborers – will attain the supreme goal.
Societies typically look down upon certain sections of people. Krishna clarifies that whoever submits to the supreme attains liberation,
irrespective of their birth, gender, or occupation.
11:32-34
I am death, the mighty destroyer of the world! I am engaged now in the destruction of all creation.
With or without you, all these warriors shall die, for I have already killed them.
Therefore, arise and be victorious! Fight merely to show the world your skill in archery. Do not hesitate; kill Drona, Bhishma, Jayad-
ratha, Karna and other brave warriors whom I have already killed. Conquer your enemies and enjoy the bountiful kingdom.
Be fearless! Fight! You will win!
15:15b Realizing the supreme is the goal of all the Vedas. I am the architect of the Upanishads and the Vedas.
(I am the source of all wisdom and knowledge). (Note: Here it is clear that Krishna was not opposed
to the Vedas, unlike Mahavira and Buddha. However, he wanted people to go beyond the karma khAnDa- similar to
this, Jesus did not reject Torah)
18:17
One who is free from ego and has complete understanding, even if he kills the whole world, he does not kill;
he is not bound. He is not bound because neither actions nor outcomes affect him. Infact, the whole world is destroyed during pralaya.
18:66
Giving up all forms of dharma take refuge in me alone. I will liberate you from all sins, do not grieve!
Here, dharma is used in the widest sense of the word. We seldom think of Albert Einstein’s PSAT, SAT or ACT scores!
There are people who like to get qualified and rubber stamped by some authority that they have surrendered their ego to the su-
preme! These are the same people who enroll in “humility” context!
Now we can see for ourselves the importance of rattling the cage. Many have rattled the cage of Sanatana Dharma, and one of the foremost
among them is Krishna. We often failed miserably in our understanding of these “rattling the cage” verses of BG. Even today, when a mis-
sionary says- “accept Jesus as savior, you are saved irrespective of your present or past status”-- we simply fail to quote the verses such as
18:66 or 9:30-32.
Also, like the Arjuna of BG1, many Hindus are stuck in caste/varNa, Astrology, Horoscopes, Gothra, Shraddham, tarpaNams, veggie-
nonveggie, aNDa, onion, garlic and gooseberry debates! Unfortunately, the “Internet” is being used more often than not to nurture and pro-
mote such contentions. Even knowledgeable people often do not know the difference between Bhagavad-Gita and Garuda Purana! Next time
when you are confronted with issues like this, please introspect and let the “TRUTH” prevail. I like to quote this line from Gitanjali*- “Where
the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the-dreary desert sand of dead habit…”
*(Gitanjali by Rabindranath Tagore was awarded Nobel Prize for literature in 1913. With that Tagore made History by being the foremost
non-White person to have received Nobel Prize)

Raksha Bandhan is a festival that is all about affection, fraternity and sublime sentiments. It is also known as Rak-
sha Bandhan which means a 'bond of protection. This is an occasion to flourish love, care, affection and sacred
bond between brothers and sisters.
The ritual begins with a prayer in front of God, then the sister ties Rakhi to her brother and wishes for his happi-
ness and well-being. In turn, the brother acknowledge the love with a promise to stand by his sister through all the
good and bad times. Sisters tie Rakhi on the wrist of their brothers amid chanting of mantras, put roli and rice on
his forehead and pray for his well-being. She bestows him with gifts and blessings. In turn, brothers also wish her a
good life and pledges to take care of her. He gives her a return gift. The gift symbolizes the physical acceptance of
her love, reminder of their togetherness and his pledge.
May this festival always serve to strengthen the bond between siblings and within families .
Rabindranath Tagore started Rakhi Utsavas, a congregation signifying the harmonious relationship amongst the
community. It was a vow for peaceful existence and commitment to all the members of society. This was Raksha
Bandhan’s universal outlook. In its true sense, Rakhi has a much broader perspective. The festival encompasses a
true sense of peace and brotherhood. The inherent values of this festival, if truly understood by all human beings
can bring the much needed relief from the violence and mistrust and spread peace in the world.

Here is a story that I read and wanted to share with all of you….Geeta
“I live in Indore , in India 's heartand..On our way back from an adjacent town, my friend and I stopped at a
highway dhaba. Placing our order, we stretched ourselves out on the cane chairs. A motley group of people
occupied other tables.
As we glanced around desultorily, a ragged man sauntered in and sat down. He poured himself a glass of wa-
ter from the steel jug. He drank two whole glasses, but ordered no food, nor did the dhaba boys ask him.
When our tea and samosas arrived, he looked at the food, filled his glass again and drank it. We saw no
greed in his eyes, but it was an easy guess, that the guy was hungry and had no money.
The dhaba boy told us, 'Oh! That madman comes in everyday. If he has money, he eats something; otherwise
he just drinks a few glasses of water and leaves.. My boss said that since water has been given to us by the
Lord, we must never stop anyone drinking it at our dhaba.'
This logic really touched me. I asked the boy to serve the man a plate of samosas. When he did so, the man
looked at him. The boy pointed to us. The man looked at us but made no acknowledgement.
As he picked up the first samosa, a little girl in rags walked up and just stood there. He gave her the samosa,
which she wolfed down. He picked up the second one and handed that to her, too. She grabbed it and ran
away. He pushed away his empty plate, filled up his glass again, drank the water and walked away from the
dhaba without a backward glance.”
I asked myself if I were capable of a gesture like that. The most I could muster was, 'I HOPE SO'. If sharing
what we have in excess is generosity, then how would we describe what the madman did? 'SELFLESS LOVE'?
It is what intellectuals talk about and madmen practice !!!!!!!!!

Nāga Panchamī (Sanskrit:  ) is a
Hindu festival celebrated by Hindus in most
parts of India. It is celebrated on Panchami in Shravan month. On this day, people worship Nāga Devata (Cobras). People go to
temples and snake pits and worship the snakes. They offer milk and silver jewelry to the Cobras to protect them from all evils.
They also fast. This festival is to celebrate the day lord Krishna defeated the serpent Kalia. On this day swings are put up in the
village and people enjoy themselves. The married girls visit their parents during this occasion.
The festival of Nāga Panchami is celebrated by Hindus to pay respect to Nāgas. The five Nāgas worshipped on Nag Panchami are
Ananta, Vāsuki, Taxak, Karkotaka and Pingala. According to a Puranic myth Brahma’s son Kashyapa had four wives. Kashyapa’s
first wife gave birth to Devas, second to Garudas, third to Nāgas and fourth to Daityas. (Dainik Jagran, 25 July 2006). The third
wife of Kashpa was called Kadroo, who gave birth to Nāgas. So Nāgas are also known as Kadroojā. They were the rulers of Pātāl-
Loka. There is a Sanskrit shloka to remember important nine Nāgas as under: (Dainik Bhaskar 30 July 2006)

SHRAVAN SOMVAR
SHRAVAN SOMVAR SHRAVAN SOMVAR
SHRAVAN SOMVAR
Shravan is the fifth month of the Hindu Calender. This month is considered highly
auspicious and powerful for worshipping Lord Shiva. It is believed that during this
month Shiva grants the prayers of devotees . According to legend, the churning of the Ocean (Samudra Manthan) took place
in the month of Shravan. It was on a Monday that Lord Shiva drank the poison hala hala to save the world. In order to lessen
the effect of poison, the devas gave him water from the Ganges. Because of this on Shravan Somvar in Shiva Temples, the
shivalinga is bathed with holy water day and night. Offerings of flowers, bel leaves and milk are made to please Lord Shiva.
Devotees observe fast till sunset. It is considered highly auspicious to wear Rudraksha beads in Shravan. A twenty four hour
“deep” also burns in the temples.
VRAT PROCEDURE
VRAT PROCEDURE VRAT PROCEDURE
VRAT PROCEDURE : Here is a brief procedure of observing the Shravan Somvar Vrat. After taking bath and performing
other purification rituals pray to the Lord Ganesh. After that pray to Lord Siva by chanting the Om Namashivaya Mantra. Offer-
ings of Bilva Leaves, milk, honey and water are made to the shiva linga after that. Panchamrit can also be used to anoint the
shivalinga. Fasting from sunrise to sunset is done on this day. Some people keep a strict fast whereas some people keep par-
tial fast and consume fruits and juices during the fast. Non vegetarian foods and foods with Onion and garlic are strictly
avoided. Many people take only saltless food during the fasting. Some people chant the Shiva Mantras like Om Namashivaya
and Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra through out the day whereas others keep Maun Vrat. Many devotees also read Shiva Purana
on this day. Many people wear only white clothes during the fast. Break the fast after praying to Lord Shiva by consuming nor-
mal food. Some people keep fasts for the whole month of Sawan and avoid eating grains during this period. It is believed if
one who fasts on all Mondays of the month of Shravan all prayers from the heart would be answered.

d Clear guidelines will need to be developed for use of the kitchen.
e. Jitubhai will manage the kitchen for one year.
f. Subsequently, a strong manager will need to be appointed for managing the kitchen.
g. Jitubhai is organizing a music concert (Amit Kumar) on July 31
st
to raise fund for the temple. The goal is to raise $30,000 to $40,000 through
this concert.
h. An additional major source of funds will be the Navratri program. Due to the large attendance (more than 1,000 people), a large venue will be
needed for this event. It has been proposed to rent space at The Cincinnati Mall in Forest park for 2 weekends.
1i. The Navratri program can result in a net gain of $15,000 to $20,000.
j. Jitubhai will need a letter from the temple to authorize him to arrange these events on behalf of the temple.
2. Culture Center
a. There is a strong need for having a culture center at the temple to stage large events. Such facility will minimize the need for taking major
temple events outside the temple premises. The goal of HSGC is to maximize the attendance at the temple and make it a focal point of the
religious and associated cultural activities.
b. This project will be a separate project.
c. A pre-requisite for such a center will be an access road from the Barg Salt Road. It will be a project needing $200,000.
d. There are two options related to construction of the culture center. A full service, state of the art culture center will be a very expensive
undertaking with cost upwards of $6 million.
e. An alternative option is to construct a scaled-down version that could be constructed in the range of $500,000. It will be a multi-purpose,
all-season facility large enough to accommodate major events.
f. Proposed dimensions for this hall are 200ft x 100 ft and a height of 18 ft. It will be attached to the temple.
g. Jeetubhai has been assigned to head the development of this hall.
h. The members of the executive committee unanimously thanked Jeetubhai for his initiative and support for the temple.
3. The Diwali celebrations will be jointly held with the Ankur Gujrati Samaj.
4. Sulbha Midha will be the coordinator for the Diwali event from HSGC.
5. Religious services at the hospitals: Bethesda North Hospital contacted the temple in order to get a contact at the temple to provide
information regarding Hindu religious services. Krutarth Jain and Amita Gupta will contact other major hospitals in the tri-state area to provide
such information to them.
6. Kiran Ji reported that the temple anniversary was very successful. The temple collected $35,000 during this event, while incurring expenses
of $8,000.
7. Chidananda Swamiji Visit: Swamiji is visiting Louisville, KY. Tushar Manek is coordinating his visit to the temple, sometime in July. It will not
cost any expense to the temple. Tushar has agreed to cover food expense for 300 people. Anisha Singh will coordinate sponsorship for
additional food if it becomes necessary.
8. Patron and Life Member Day: Like last year, the executive committee is planning to organize an event to thank the patrons and life members.
Raneshwar Ji, Meena Mehta Ji, Jitubhai will discuss the event and determine a date for this event.
9. Dance Competition on August 28

9. Dance Competition on August 28th: Sulbha Midha reported that the dance competition will be held at
Mason High School. The venue costs about $3500. So far, $1200 .worth of sponsorships have been received . we are expecting more fund
raising through additional Tickets and sponsorship , we will be providing dinner also.
10. Tickets for this event will be about $10-$12 per person. It is expected to have an attendance of at least 500 people.
11. Hindu Awareness Day: It will be celebrated in the temple on September 25
th
. For last 3 years, VHP of America has partnered with the temple
to organize this event. Several Bal Vihar groups will present programs in this function. Bal Ji will work to get this declared as the Hindu
Awareness Day in the Clermont County.
12. General Body Meeting: This meeting will be on last Sunday of June, 2010. All chairs of the executive committee will present reports for their
respective areas on this day.
13. Children’s Day Camp: The VHP of America will hold a children’s day camp at the temple on August 21
st
. Over 50 children attended this event
last year. The executive committee has authorized expense of up to $500 to buy religious books to gift the children attending th
is event.

14. Rath Yatra: Preparations for this event will be handled by Krutarth Jain.
15. Hindu Mandir Executive Council meeting: This event is organized to provide a common platform to all Hindu mandirs in
North America. Krutarth Jain will attend this meeting on behalf of HSGC, to be held in Houston, TX. The executive committee
approved a $200 registration fees for this event.
16. Prasad Ji has asked for creation of a reimbursement form that will carry some explanation of the incurred expenses. Kru-
tarth Jain will create a form and publish it in Aradhana. All committee chairs will be notified of the procedure for approval of
the expenses.
17. The executive committee will obtain a signed Conflict of Interest policy statement from each committee member.
18. The Kroger / Meijer card program will be prominently featured in Aradhana. A new message will need to be crafted to garner
more attention from the readers of Aradhana.
19. Achievements by community members: The executive committee will approve publishing of major accomplishment by the
members of the Hindu community in the HSGC area on a case by case basis.
20. Blacktopping project: Raneshwar Ji reported that a separate account will need to be created for the blacktopping project. He
will also do fundraising for this project.
21. Maintenance Fund: The executive committee decided that a separate fund for emergency repairs is not needed. Such ex-
penses could be covered through the general funds.
22. Shiv Ji stated that he will create a project called “Beautify the Temple” that will focus on beautification of the temple such as
landscaping. He will assume the responsibility for this project.
23. Temple Calendar: Meena and Ashwin Mehta will be responsible for the temple calendar. The executive committee is debat-
ing whether to charge for the calendar.
24. Geeta Ji made the executive committee aware of a foundation called AWIO that helps victims of domestic violence. There are
many women in the Hindu community who face these situations. This is a silent issue facing our community. Geeta Ji will
represent HSGC in this organization and try to provide and coordinate help for women from the Hindu community needing
such help.
25. Cremation Committee: Tushar Manek will take lead in this committee that will try to provide guidance on cremation needs of
the Hindu community.
